The quilt she taught is a simple but versatile pattern. She also incorporated a discussion about use of color in the quilt. Specifically using analogous colors in the quilt.

Unfortunately, we were all so engrossed in the class that none of us thought to take pictures. Thank you, Maria for a great class. We all enjoyed it.

November 2009 Business Meeting Minutes

ATTENDANCE: 14 members and 2 visitors

Pam welcomed our two visitors.

SECRETARY'S REPORT
The minutes from last month need two corrections: 1) Under “Challenge Quilts”, Pam Unruh’s name needs to be corrected, and 2) the name Trisha Wells should be changed to Trisha Waters. A motion was made by Dorothy and seconded by Kristina that the minutes be approved as corrected.

TREASURER'S REPORT
It was suggested that the Special Account be given a different name. After some discussion, it was decided the name of the special account would be Education Account. Also, when there is a withdrawal, please specify which account it came out of. The Treasurer’s Report was approved and seconded. All were in favor of accepting this report.

OLD BUSINESS

Pam thanked everyone who participated in the Quilt Show. It was a big success! There were 45 quilts on display and 168 people attended. As mentioned in the guild’s newsletter, first place went to Dorothy Sauder, second place went to Marie Dixon, and third place went to Kathy Baldwin. There was an article in the Calhoun Times last week with Dorothy’s picture! It was suggested that next year we try a bit harder to advertise in the paper ahead of the show, especially in the upcoming events column.

NEW BUSINESS

Cards were handed out to those in attendance to write down anything we would like to see changed in the guild’s by-laws. The cards were to be returned to Pam. A committee will be meeting this week to go over the by-laws.

There are five Mondays this month, so we will have a Charity Quilt Work Night on Monday, November 30. Marie commented that jeans are needed and to please return any charity quilts that anyone still has.

Pam announced that the Georgia Quilt Council in Carrollton, GA is asking guilds in Georgia to each make a quilt, which will be displayed and then auctioned off. The money would go toward the museum/council. This is a long-term project (approx two years) of which everyone in the guild would work on it together. The majority were in favor of this project.

The Christmas party is set for Monday, December 14 @ 6:00 PM at the First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Marie said the doors should be unlocked so the decorating committee can get in earlier. A sheet was passed around to sign up for food. As in the past, we will exchange a yard of fabric ($7.00 or more). We should wrap it in paper or a gift bag. The wrapping will not be a competition this year. Carrie is planning a fun game for the party.

Pam announced that two officers will be stepping down next year (Dot Holmes and Karen Gentsch). She asked that we please be thinking about who would be willing to take these offices.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Kristina announced an upcoming event, Traditions Arts & Crafts Show, to be held on December 5 & 6 at the North Georgia Fairgrounds in Dalton, Georgia.

Mary Stinnett handed out business cards to advertise a website (Blastoff) for shopping on-line and earning credit by participating. Many familiar stores are represented, including a fabric store.

BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH

Pam demonstrated the construction of the “Rising Star”.

SHOW ‘N TELL

Marie: “Cars” quilt
Stained glass appliqué wall hanging
Appliqué fans (hearts) quilt

Kristina: Disappearing Nine-Patch (patriotic) quilt top

Emilie: Selvage tote bag

Dot: Block-of-the-Month

Pat G/Karen: Troll quilts which were taken to New Echota Frontier Days to demonstrate
quilt tying

The meeting was adjourned. Eighteen members were in attendance.

Reading: Mary Smith read letter from her daughter about not giving up and keep on quilting.

Secretary's Report - Kristina Parmer moved that we approve the minutes as printed in the newsletter and Kathy Baldwin seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Treasurer's Report – Dot Holmes read the Treasurer's report for September. Pat Gobbel moved that we accept the report and Dorothy Sauder seconded the motion.

Sunshine Report: Dot Holmes sent six birthday cards and one get well card to Thelma Wheat.

Charity Quilt Report: Marie has nothing new to report. Dorothy took home 5 quilts from the work night and quilted and put the border on them.

Announcements:
Charter member Margeret King died. After checking with the funeral home to find out what the families preferences were Debbie Baue moved that we donate $50 to Belmont Baptist Church in Margaret King's memory. Pat G seconded the motion and the it passed unanimously.
Cobb County quilt guild show will be held September 18-20 at the Cobb County Civic Center.
Troy Cross is interested in starting a quilt kit business. He would like to have someone sew for him. He would like someone who thinks outside of the box. The person would help to create the kit, chose colors and borders plus sewing. If interested please call him at 706-629-1814 or email him at brotherly_servant@yahoo.com

Old Business:
The quilt show will be in the last week of October. We passed out the quilt show entry forms. Please bring them to the October business meeting.
The challenge quilts are due in October also. There have been some confusion on the Challenge rules, so we discussed letting people enter quilts that have been professionally quilted but not be judged in that category. We had great attendance and everyone was busy working on all kinds of quilts. We all gathered and worked on charity quilts. Pat W. and Mary worked on making quilt sandwiches. I think they got at least 15 quilt sandwiches made.

There were two large quilt frames and one smaller quilt frame set up. Ruby, Robbie, Dorothy, Marie, Mary, Jan and her two daughters all sat around the frames and tie-quilted several quilts.

Pam and her husband David put together a cabinet that will stay at the library to hold guild items including the sandwiched quilts waiting for someone to finish them.

Pat G pieced some backs for quilts, Karen sewed together a couple of quilts "pillow case" style, and Diane did some pressing and hand work on bindings.

Many of us took home quilts to finish and Marie would like us to bring finished charity quilts to the August business meeting.

What would you all think about setting up some quilting frames during business meetings so people can tie quilt some of these quilts during the meeting?

June Work Night Reminder

Remember that the June Work Night is going to be a charity quilt "stitch in".
