Quilting Bloggers Badge

Friday, January 30, 2009

You may have noticed a new badge on our blog. I submitted our blog to the Quilting Bloggers site. Its a good site to find other quilting blogs. There are many quilting blogs out there with lots of good information.

January 2009 - Work Night

Monday was our January work night. Marie taught us to make quilted postcards. She brought some supplies for us and we all walked out with a complete postcard, no sewing needed!

After working on the quilted postcards Pat G handed out some information she compiled on machine quilting and we watched a portion of a Fons and Porter DVD.

We got a lot of good information from both women. Thanks Marie and Pat!

Secretary's Report

The Scrappy Quilters guild meeting was called to order by Pat Wells January 12, 2009 at 6:080 at the Calhoun Public Library. 24 members and one guest were in attendance. Debbie Baue a friend of Pam Unruh visited with us tonight and we hope she will become a new member. Marguerite Causby and Terri Thomas were both in the hospital in December, but both are doing better and attended the meeting.

The reading was chosen by Marguerite from the Quilt of Life and read by Pam Unruh.

Pat Wells read the newsletter to the group. There was a glitch and no one received the electronic versions of the newsletter. Dot Holmes read the Treasurer's Report. Pat Gobbel moved that we accept the minutes and the treasure's report as as read, and Christina Parmer seconded the motion.

Sunshine report: Dot Holmes sent out three birthday cards and two get well cards.

Charity Report: Marie Dixon reported that she still needs 3 more bingo blocks. Time to start making new charity quilts again. The battered women's shelter were happy to get the quilts because they were down to 2 or 3. At the time of the meeting 55 quilts had been donated this year.

Announcements:
Pat Gobbel announced that the Atlanta Sewing Center is sponsoring a 3 day seminar with Elenor Burns. Contact the Atlanta Sewing Center for more information.

Karen Gentsch passed around the brochure for the Original Quilting and Sewing Expo, March 5-7 at the Gwinnet Center.

Karen Gentsch handed out the url to the blog (http://scrappyquiltersguild.blogspot.com/). Any questions or suggestions can be sent to Karen. Karen sent invitation emails to all she had addresses for. If anyone did not get an invitation and has an email address please contact Karen.

New Business:
Marie Dixon handed out instructions for the postcard for this months work night. Bring 6X4 1/2 muslin or white rectangle for the back of the postcard. Bring fabric to use for the postcard. Ne sewing machine is needed this time. Marie will teach 2 different ways to make the postcards.

Nomination/Election of new officers:
Dot Holmes was nominated to continue as Treasurer and Sunshine Committee chair.
Karen Gentsch was nominated to continue serving as Secretary.
Christina Parmer was nominated for Vice President.
Pam Unruh was nominated for President.
All four nominees accepted the position. The group voted to accept the nominees as the officers for the coming year.
Emilie suggested that the Vice President should handle scheduling visiting quilt teachers.
Pat Gobbel mentioned that after she steps down as Vice President she would like to be a greeter to introduce visitors and make them welcome.

Old Business: We have forms for the Calhoun Library cookbook. Any recipes need to be submitted by this weekend.

Block of the Month: Sandy Blake presented the Bow Tie block.

Technique: Pat Wells presented a strip piecing technique. Cut a six inch strip from a large scale print focus fabric. Cut smaller strips from three coordinating fabrics. Sew all four strips together. Then use a square ruler placed diagonally on the strip unit to cut pieces. You will end up with squares and triangle units which can be pieced together in different patterns.
